I leave Castro-Urdiales checking out possible kitesurfing spots, but there is no wind. I take a look at Donostia-San-Sebastian, lovely town/waterfront, but not what I'm looking for, so on past Bilbao and Santander to mid north coast and Llanes. I like this town but how can Llanes be pronounced 'Yanis'. I struggle with French, what chance do I have with Spanish?

Apparently it's festival time. Involves some very loud 'BANGS', fireworks without the fire, bagpipes and spinning.

I try a bit of fishing in the harbour, but it rains so I head back to Poo on my bike.
Llandes has no camping but just west is Poo and a campsite. This place is rammed but has a few day camper spaces.

Just a minimal setup, kites in the tent and cook al fresco, until the gas ran out. Difficult to find the gas but got some in the end.

Poo creek and breach

Staff say I should try Tirimbia beach for kitesurfing. A great spot accessed through a village with the narrowest streets, almost running over the resident's toes in passing. Of course it's the weekend and the place is rammed with cars parked everywhere, seem to remember Cornwall to be very similar, I leave to return a few days later for a surfing lesson.

Can't do justice to the view. The route to the beach is via a path, ok on the way down but after three hours in the water, the way up was a challenge. So how to surf? Get yourself and board out through the surf, not too difficult. Watch for a wave behind you, paddle furiously with hands, push your chest up with hands inboard below waist and jump on the board with both feet - you've got to be joking! I got on my kness but getting my feet below my bum, forget it. So I resorted to lying on the board and edging it to surf along the wave. I think I last did this as a kid, fun but not surfing.
