Been north, try south

So far I've travelled west from Santander to the north west corner of Spain. I'm meeting Howard and family on 29th at Santiago, so south it is.

South or southwest? I need to get to Santiago but Ferrol is southwest with lots of beaches shown to the north, so that's where I landed up. A bit of a mistake. The drive was through the mountains, very few vehicles on the road, long climb up into the clouds and a fast decent to Ferrol, a large port and industrial town. The centre is a mass of blocks of flats with narrow streets. I was looking for a campsite and Google maps takes me round and round the centre to what was clearly not a campsite! I finally get out of the city to go back north in search of the beaches. And what a change, nice comfortable holiday homes just up the road.

I see on the map bar Boa Onda on Aldea Fonta next to a long beach, so that's where I go. Turning off the highway, a long slow decent to the beach. Not a disappointment, a big sandy beach with strong wind blown surf. And what of Boa Onda? It looks abandoned, I walk round and see a couple sitting out front. I go back to the main entance and lo, inside it's a smart gaff, populated by ladies that lunch, except there was no food served before 8:00pm, I settle for a beer. This has to be an ace surfing spot but again, nobody is in the water and I still haven't seen a kite!

Right, I need to find a campsite and there are a bunch shown just south. Takes around 30min to locate the first one but, it's closed, so are the rest. I find a proprietor getting ready for opening on 1st June along with everyone else. He directs me to Santa Cruz and rings ahead to confirm the site is open. Amazing, he didn't speak a word of English and my Spanish, well, a minor miricle.

Another 30min drive and I arrive, well I missed the carefully hidden entrance, stop up the road and find somewhere I can do a 180 without having to reverse the trailer. I arrive at Los Manzos Camping and it's still light. Nice reception, nice site. I find a spot and get my head down, it's been a long day's driving.
